Shan State
Pindaya and Golden Caves
It is a small uphill town and famous for "Golden Caves" but
the town itself has some curious points, such as the
traditional paper production, ancient monasteries and
umbrella workshops.
"The Golden Caves" is actually some elevation above the town
and accessed through the way under the shady century old
banyan trees. The main cave is fully packed with a variety
of Buddha images, stupas, figures and embellishments along
its length datable not earlier than the 16th century.
Curiously, Indian style images and donors are experienced in
a reasonable number.
The cool breeze and panoramic view on the environs,
including Ponetaloke Lake at a distance are fantastic and
incredible.

Nyaung Shwe
Once the residence of Shan Sawbwa, local chieftain, it is
now a major station and undergone with the popularity of
Inle lake nearby. But, Sawbwa Museum, the ex.haw of the
regional sawbwa, is a visit worthwhile. It is the building
composed by the architectural combination of Europe, Myanmar
tradition and Shan practice.

Inle Lake
The second biggest of its kind in Myanmar.It is best known
of up-hill lake, for leg-rowing style, floating islands and
Paung Daw Oo Pagoda. On the other hand, impressive arts and
handicrafts, viz, silk-weaving, lotus-robe, pottery,
silversmith and so on are also interesting. Enjoying the
different ethnic groups such as Inn tha, Shan, Pa O and so
on, Market would be the best in the morning.

Taunggyi
It is the capital of Shan state and of beauty with clean
inter-roads, especially; the bright cherry flowers are covering the
roads and the best place for leisure walk. Shan State Museum and Gem
market are your visiting points. It is one of the major business
centres for China's products. "Fire balloon contest", a traditional
Shan festival, is the most crowded public fare and usually held in
Tazaungdine (November) annually.

Fire Balloon Contest
The best time to visit Taunggyi is during the fire balloon contest
held usually in November. A various shapes and designs of fire
balloon will exactly draw the attention of every on-looker.

Kakku
With the inscription of Sawadee magazine, it is becoming in a few
years and basically composed of about 2500 pagodas in the heart of
Pa-O territory, some 26 miles away from Taunggyi. On the way, one of
Pa O villages and their life-styles can be appreciated. Remarkably,
most pagodas are comparatively small in size but embellished with
fine stucco-carvings like Bagan.

Kalaw
Not known as Pyin Oo Lwin, it is more beautiful and tranquil than
Pyin Oo Lwin, and then has reputated as "Pine City"
encircled by sweet smelling pine tree round. The small, town on the
plain among the blue hills retains more natural and unspoiled
environs. Local foods are the best for breakfast. Pedestrians will
lead to Shwe Umin natural cave on lime stone bed and Mahamuni of
Dry-lacquered Buddha.

Thibaw
It is one of the cities in northern Shan State and well-know for
tea-leaves production. On the, way to Thibaw, the famous "Gokehteik
Viaduct" is just beyond Kyaukme and before Thibaw. Regarding on its
impressive structure, it is highly regarded as the prettiest bridge
in Myanmar, comparable to Wesminster Bridge over the Thame River of
England. The Bawgyo Pagoda is commonest visiting point of the city
and plantations are also enjoyable.
Most of the cities are now becoming cycling activities and
base-camps for trekking to ethnic village, especially, Pa Laung
villages on the slopes nearby Inle Lake, Kalaw and Pindaya. Their
environs are the best places for trekking and ethnic studies.

Kyaington
It is the major city of eastern Shan State and border-town of
Myanmar and China, some 230 miles (456 kilos) away from Taunggyi.
Besides, Mahamyatmuni, Naungton, lake, ancient monastery together
with pottery production, the commonest visiting points are those of
Thittahin hillock and the prettiest colourful model village of
lahu-akha people. But, there are also Shan, Palaung and other in
Kyaing Tong and its environs.
